Expert Micro-Drilling Testing for Tree Decay

Specialist micro-drilling investigation to help assess suspected internal decay, cavities and changes in wood resistance.

Looking for Resistograph® testing? We use the IML-RESI PD400 for specialist micro-drilling resistance assessments.

Send us a few details and our arboricultural consultants will review the tree and help identify whether micro-drilling resistance testing, Arbotom sonic tomography or another specialist assessment is appropriate.

Targeted internal investigation Fine-drill resistance data can help investigate suspected decay, cavities and changes in wood condition.
Useful supporting evidence Results can add detail where visual inspection or other diagnostic methods leave uncertainty.
Consultant reviewed Testing is interpreted alongside the tree's wider condition, defects and management context.

Micro-Drilling Tree Testing for Decay

Specialist tree decay investigation using the IML-RESI PD400. Micro-drilling resistance profiles help identify changes in wood condition, suspected cavities and possible internal decay.

If your local authority, tree consultant or tree surgeon has asked for a closer investigation of a tree's internal condition, Arbor Cultural can help. We use the specialist IML-RESI PD400 micro-drilling instrument to record changes in drilling resistance along a narrow path through the wood. Because a tree can appear healthy externally while containing internal defects, this evidence can help our arboricultural consultants assess suspected decay and advise on appropriate management. Results are interpreted alongside the tree's wider condition and site circumstances, rather than used as a standalone guarantee of safety.

Looking for Resistograph® testing? Resistograph® is a trademark used for RINNTECH resistance-drilling equipment. Arbor Cultural uses the IML-RESI PD400 for specialist micro-drilling resistance testing, not a Resistograph-branded instrument.

How Micro-Drilling Testing Works

Micro-drilling is a minimally invasive diagnostic technique in which a fine drill needle advances through the wood while the equipment records resistance along the drilled path. Changes in the resistance profile can indicate areas that warrant closer examination, such as suspected cavities, softened wood or decay. Depending on the equipment configuration, additional feed-force measurements may assist interpretation. The findings do not directly measure the overall strength or stability of the tree, but can provide useful supporting evidence for tree management decisions, surveys and discussions with relevant authorities.

IML-RESI PD400 Digital Resistance Profiles

The instrument electronically records changes in drilling resistance against depth, creating a profile that can be reviewed and included in the consultant's report. Where the appropriate module is fitted, a feed-force curve can provide additional information. Profiles relate to the particular drilled paths, helping locate and assess suspected defects rather than automatically identifying the precise type of decay throughout the tree.

Minimally Invasive Diagnostics

Our micro-drilling method uses a fine needle, typically around 3 mm in diameter, to obtain information from within the stem or branch. Because drilling creates a small opening, the method is more accurately described as minimally invasive rather than completely non-destructive. Testing locations are selected carefully to balance the value of the evidence against the impact on the tree.

Targeted Cavity & Decay Investigation

Where visual inspection or sounding suggests an internal defect, our consultants can select appropriate points for micro-drilling to gather more detailed information. Resistance readings can support an assessment of suspected cavities or decay along those paths. Where appropriate, results may be considered alongside ArboTom Sonic Tomography for a broader understanding of the stem's condition.

Root Flare & Buttress Assessment

Suspected decay around the root flare or buttress roots sometimes calls for closer examination. Micro-drilling can be considered alongside Air Spade root investigation where appropriate. Any assessment of stability also takes account of roots, soil conditions, visible defects and site exposure, particularly for trees near roads, schools and homes across Surrey and Greater London.

The Science of Drilling Resistance

The IML-RESI PD400 records a drilling-resistance profile as a slender needle travels into the timber. Variations in the curve can reflect differences in wood structure and condition; unusually low resistance may warrant further investigation for cavities or decay. Readings must be interpreted in context, including the tree species, the location of each drilling and other inspection findings. Micro-drilling adds objective evidence to professional judgement, but a single profile cannot establish the tree's overall load-bearing capacity or identify the precise cause of a defect on its own.

Protecting Your Landscape Assets

Specialist micro-drilling can help inform proportionate decisions about valuable trees, including whether monitoring, further investigation or management work is appropriate. Our arboricultural consultants consider the evidence alongside visual inspections and the surrounding environment, with the aim of supporting sound decisions for people, property and tree retention. Arbor Cultural Ltd draws on its Consulting Arborist Society (CAS) membership and Bond Solon training to provide considered technical reports for homeowners, developers, insurers and local authority discussions where relevant.
