Do I need a BS5837 tree survey for planning permission?
If trees on or close to the site could influence a proposal, the planning authority may require BS5837 information. Send us the validation request, planning condition or architect’s wording and we can help identify the right starting scope.
What is the difference between a BS5837 Tree Survey and a Tree Report?
The survey is the site inspection and tree data. A report interprets that information for the planning purpose. Depending on the project, the report package can also include a Tree Constraints Plan, Arboricultural Impact Assessment, Tree Protection Plan or Arboricultural Method Statement.
What is a Tree Constraints Plan (TCP)?
A TCP maps surveyed tree constraints such as crowns and Root Protection Areas so the design team can understand the space retained trees need before or during design.
What is an Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA)?
An AIA assesses how the proposed design affects retained trees, removals, pruning, access, surfacing and other project elements, and explains the mitigation where needed.
What is an Arboricultural Method Statement (AMS)?
An AMS sets out the practical methods and sequencing for sensitive operations close to retained trees, such as excavation, demolition, access, services or specialist construction methods.

Can you use an existing tree survey?

No consultant can guarantee a planning authority’s decision. We can prepare the agreed arboricultural information professionally and respond to the specific planning requirement, but acceptance remains with the authority.
